What is CFS?

It's All about Non Judgemental Singing!

Creative Freedom Singing is an educational programme centred around non-judgemental singing. A big part of it involves singing your way through normally-spoken situations.

The combination of improvising notes from the top of your head and sharing them in everyday situations really loosens up your creativity, and doing it in a friendly and supportive group setting is great for confidence and overcoming inhibitions about creative sharing.

Sharyn and Niall, Singing Day facilitators

An important part of CFS is that it encourages to sing as you feel in the moment, to go through the the common tendency to compare yourself with someone else. We don't learn melodies or lyrics (you can get that type of singing training anywhere.) We just encourage you to sing whatever thoughts come to you in each situation, using whatever notes come to you in the moment.

Just singing spontaneously like this alone would be great for you, but CFS offers more. Our unique repertoire of fun games and activities makes it fun and easy for you to gently let go of the inhibitions that get in the way of releasing your full singing voice.

In summary, CFS is good for:

  • Loosens up creativity and free expressiveness,, promotes clarity and faciliy in communication
  • Brilliant for confidence, self-esteem, personal poise, charisma and power.
  • Excellent for communication skills, acting, theatre and musical performance, public speaking and presentation
  • Increased physical health; respiratory health, circulation, hormone balance (stress management etc.)

You can find out more about the many ways in which singing is good for you on our Benefits page.

Philosophy Of CFS

Singing Day Philosophy

Some people are better swimmers than others. Some of us are better at delivering speeches than others. But none of us would decide that someone else was such a good swimmer or speaker that we’re now going to stop having fun in the pool or stop speaking for good. Yet, that’s exactly what many of us do when it comes to singing. This reflects judgements about the value of singing but also about our ‘right’ to express ourselves through singing.

The aim of Creative Freedom Signing is not to be an expert singer. In fact, it’s not even to be a good singer, but simply to realise that no matter what your voice sounds like, it's your voice, and being a part of you, there’s value in using in it. Anyone needing convincing about the benefits of singing need only do a quick ‘Google’ of "is singing good for you?" or a similar search term.

We're already aware of the value of singing, and we also know that there are many excellent educational services on offer for anyone wishing to take up singing. How we differ from these services, however, is that our mission is to return singing to people who have denied themselves their own freedom of vocal expression because of unrealistic judgements.

The more comfortable and accepting you are of your singing voice as it is, the more likely you are to find yourself singing spontaneously throughout the day. This is good for your mood and brightens your day; spontaneous singing is associated with happiness and lightness.
